Reporting solution for an online ecommerce application

The client- A leading e-commerce service provider

The process- The client ran an online e-commerce service and offered a huge chain of products to its customers. The existing system included a well-defined database functioned commendably as far as maintaining data was concerned. However, the system did not offer good reporting capabilities to the client in terms of various order and product statistics, region wise sales, sector wise sales, profit analysis etc.

The requirements- The challenge was to design and develop a reporting solution that provides necessary business information to the client for further analysis and effective decision-making. Once developed, the reporting solution has to be seamlessly integrated with the current ecommerce solution used by the client.

Solution and Approach taken by Synapse-Consultants - Synapse-Consultants is a leading software development company with a unique expertise in technical support and development. Based on the requirements of the client, a team of experienced developers worked with the functional manager to understand the existing system and the information flow between the various system modules. This helped the team have a good insight into the existing database schema, identify entities, and define relationships shared among them. Based on the client's requirements and objectives, the team planned to use XML as the medium to access information in to our reporting solution from the existing database. Since XML is platform independent and allows user-defined tags, it was quick and easy to implement.

The reporting solution parsed the XML to fetch specific content and do necessary computations on the data to generate reports. The solution was quite extensive and offered several statistics and figures as per the client's needs. The presentation layer was well designed so that information was well presented with key values highlighted.

The team of developers also suggested the client to implement a graphical representation for each report in the form of various types of charts and graphs. The graphs were dynamic and provided a one-glance analysis of the statistical and comparison data.

The Result- The developed system has a reporting interface that seamlessly interacts with the ecommerce application and generates various reports - both data and graphical - for the convenience of management. The reporting interface substantially improved operations for the client and helped increase productivity by focusing on key functional areas.
